Still going after all these years
I saw a story on the nightly news that reminded me of a couple of earlier posts.
It’s time to leave the war we never should have started. The Iraq civil war will continue and ultimately our puppet government will fail and Iraq may well divide into three separate countries. But what happens to Iraq is out of our hands now just like it always was. Iraq’s destiny is still in the hands of the Iraqi people. There’s no reason for Americans to continue to train terrorists and die fighting a fight that ultimately has to be decided by Iraqis. It’s time to bring our troops home.
It’s time to end the Iraq mistake 05/30/2006
Call it what you like what we see today is part of the progression towards the inevitable conclusion of a three state nation where Iraq once stood. A conclusion we could have engineered with a $0.25 bullet, a sniper rifle, and one special forces soldier instead of the $300 billion dollar price tag and 40,000 lives paid to date.
I’m obviously no expert on foreign policy affairs, but it still seems to me that - given the deeply rooted sectarianism in Iraq and the virtual tug-of-war between neighboring countries over the future of Iraq - the country will eventually be informally or explicitly divided into three distinct regions or nations. And I think that the most humane thing we can do is facilitate this process rather than “staying the course” until a democratic administration is voted into office in 2008 and then “cutting-and-running” creating a security vacuum where more people die than would have otherwise.
